For nearly five decades, Japanese Tea Gardens has shaped San Francisco's understanding of what Japanese baked goods can be — precise, layered, and deeply rooted in technique passed down through the family.
Japanese Tea Gardens did not arrive in San Francisco as a trend. It arrived as a commitment — to the belief that a properly executed melon pan, a tea whisked to the exact consistency, a taiyaki with the correct ratio of filling to shell — these things matter. They always have.
Founded in 1976 by a family who brought techniques from Kyoto and Tokyo, the business grew from a single counter in Chinatown into one of San Francisco's most respected Japanese bakeries. Three generations later, the standards remain unchanged: no shortcuts, no compromises, no recipes that haven't been refined over decades.
Every category in our shop exists because we've spent years perfecting it. We don't carry everything — we carry what we can execute to the standard we set for ourselves.
Single-origin matcha from Uji and Shizuoka. Stone-ground, vibrantly colored, and whisked to order. Also available: hojicha, genmaicha, and sencha — all imported directly.
Melon pan with a perfectly caramelized crust. Castella sponge light as air. Dorayaki filled with house-made red bean. Each pastry follows a recipe refined over decades.
Made-to-order taiyaki in the traditional fish mold. Classic red bean, custard, chocolate, and seasonal variations. Battered, filled, and served warm — the way it should be.
Shokupan with a cloud-like crumb. Anpan with sweet red bean. Curry bread with a savory center. Our breads use a tangzhong technique that keeps them fresh far longer than conventional recipes.
Mochi for Obon. Sakura-themed confections for spring. Pumpkin castella in autumn. We follow the Japanese seasonal calendar — if it's the right time of year, you'll find it on our shelves.
Curated gift sets for holidays, corporate events, and special occasions. Custom packaging available. We also accommodate catering orders for offices and gatherings — order in advance.
There is a specific way to whisk matcha that extracts the umami without creating bitterness. There is a precise hydration level for shokupan dough that creates its signature texture. These are not opinions — they are the result of thousands of batches, rejected and remade until they were right.
Tea from certified estates in Uji and Shizuoka. Rice flour, red bean paste, and specialty flours sourced from Japanese suppliers.
Nothing is made in bulk and held. Every batch is baked or assembled to order, which means some items sell out — and that's by design.
Our products contain no artificial preservatives. They are meant to be enjoyed fresh, and we structure our production around that reality.
"I've been coming here for over ten years. The matcha is the real deal — you can tell it's not some powdered substitute. And the melon pan every Saturday morning is the highlight of my week."
"We ordered gift boxes for our entire office for the holidays. The presentation was beautiful, the variety was thoughtful, and every single person asked where we got them. This is now our go-to for client gifts."
"As someone who grew up in Kyoto, I can say with confidence that this is the most authentic Japanese bakery outside of Japan. The attention to detail in every product is remarkable. It feels like home."
We're located in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown, just steps from Portsmouth Square. Whether you're stopping in for a quick matcha or planning a catering order, we welcome you.
